The ways of Europe. Walking & learning
“Walking together, learning from Europe, growing beyond borders.”
Italy
International and collaborative learning

Goals
This project aims to present students with an original and concrete approach to the study of the cultures and traditions of three different European countries. The exchanges in our three countries aim to enhance the European heritage and they will be an opportunity to strengthen relations between our schools and to underline the importance of a sustainable economy as well as the value of meeting others along the way.

Target group and educational context
High school in different countries of Europe (economics schools, languages schools, engeneering and informatic schools)

Why is this practice inspiring?
This practice is effective because it combines physical activity with experiential learning, allowing participants to discover European culture, history, and local communities in a direct and engaging way. Walking encourages active participation, teamwork, and communication among young people from different countries, creating a stronger sense of connection and intercultural understanding.
It is inspiring because learning does not happen only in classrooms, but through real experiences, observation, and interaction with the environment. Participants develop important skills such as adaptability, collaboration, problem-solving, and environmental awareness while exploring new places together.
This practice is worth implementing because it promotes healthy lifestyles, inclusion, and sustainable mobility at the same time. It also makes education more dynamic and memorable, helping participants build meaningful relationships and gain a deeper appreciation of European diversity and shared values.

Implementation
Phase 1: theory and research (2020/2021)
Colloquiums or conferences:
1. Conferences: “The Via Postumia and the Way of Saint Anthony”, “The Way of Saint James from Puy en Velay to Santiago”, “La Via Francigena”.
2. Seminar: programming of an excursion and cultural route.
3. Research activities by students. They feed a website or a Vlog to information.
Phase 2: itineraries and exchanges (2021/2022)
During this phase we will select the students who will go to the three countries (High Schools) to practice the experience of walking on a part of the path (3-4 days of walking).
The exchanges will last a week and during the activity on the territory, moments of conviviality will be organized in the presence of the welcoming schools.
Phase 3: communications and dissemination (2021/2022).
Finally, after the three exchange trips, the students will organize their work and the material collected during the first two phases, to translate their investigations into the 4 languages involved and to create a public Vlog to disseminate information on the three known paths.
Expected results
Final product: creation of a Vlog translated into the 4 languages used with images, videos and itineraries made by the students during their trips on the paths.
Improve the motivation of students towards learning European languages and culture. Stimulate their creativity and their historical, artistic and ecological curiosity towards the world of paths and their traditions. A strong exchange of information, ideas and cultures, focusing above all on work and economic perspectives linked to nature and slow tourism networks. Develop greater autonomy and a sense of responsibility in students through interdisciplinary research activity and the concrete experience of exchange in the foreign countries to be visited, discovering them on foot.
The translated Vlog will be in the form of a visual itinerary where we can locate the necessary information on the paths and especially on those traveled and it will be available on the Internet.
